Introduction

Designated item: Municipal Folklore Cultural Heritage
Designated date: October 19, 1991
Jeongbalsan-dong is filled with many stylish detached homes. It is hard to believe that such a folksy area exists in this town. There is a section of the path, though, where the old vibes really come through. That place is the Ilsan Bamgasi Thatched House. By preserving the form of thatched-roof houses where common people lived in the central region during the late Joseon Dynasty about 200 years ago, this site provides a glimpse of life at the time. The thatched houses are constructed from chestnut wood and have a coiled roof that makes the sky appear spherical. In addition to the Bamgasi Thatched House, there is a folk exhibition hall where visitors can get a glimpse of everyday life during the late Joseon Dynasty. You may also apply for a program in which a professional instructor recounts the history of old games and the Bamgasi Thatched House.
