Haengjusanseong Fortress
  • Address 89 Haengju-ro 15beon-gil, Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do

Introduction

It is a soil-constructed mountain fortress built at the location widely known for being the scene of the Battle of Haengju led by General Kwon Yul during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. It is unknown exactly when the fortress was constructed, but it appears to have existed since the Three Kingdoms period, as it features a broad plain surrounded by steep cliffs, which is consistent with the fortress design of the early Three Kingdoms period. The fortress is roughly one kilometer in length and resembles a Temoe-style fortress. A small inner fortress encircles the mountain's peak, and a larger outer fortress encircles the valley. The Hangang River flows to the south and Changneungcheon Stream flows to the southeast, forming a natural defense for the mountain fortress. This region was Baekje's territory during the early period of the Three Kingdoms, and it is a key area for north-south transportation as a hub for the waterway connecting to the west coast. Inside the fortress, numerous artifacts from the Unified Silla period have been discovered, including pieces of earthenware from the Three Kingdoms period and roof tiles engraved with fish bone patterns. The Battle of Haengju is one of the three major battles of the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. In the 26th year of King Seonjo's reign (1593), castle women carried stones in their skirts and supplied them to the soldiers, resulting in a decisive victory. It is also said that it was named “Haengju Skirt Victory” in honor of the women's assistance at the time, after the name of Haengju. Since the Three Kingdoms period, this fortress, along with other fortresses in the Hangang River basin, played an important role as a defensive fortress. There is also the Chungjangsa Shrine, paying tribute to General Kwon Yul.
