Ilsan Market
  • Address 9 Ilcheong-ro 12beon-gil, Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do

Introduction

As the Gyeongui Line railroad opened in 1908 and the district office relocated to Ilsan, Ilsan Market developed around the Ilsan Intersection (taxi stop). While the market was experiencing growth and prosperity as the heart of Goyang and Paju's commercial districts, the crowding that resulted from its narrow layout necessitated the reclamation of nearby rice fields in 1956. The third and eighth days of every month became market days, and a cattle market was even established as a result of its success. In 1979, in accordance with a traditional market modernization plan, individual wooden buildings were replaced with a reinforced concrete complex, where the market moved in 1983 and continues to stand the test of time. There are about 130 stores open year round, 90 of which are located in the eight buildings (totaling about 5,200㎡) and another 40 located in its proximity. Currently, Ilsan Market has cultural significance as a traditional fifth-day market in the heart of the city, surpassing its original function as a marketplace for buying and selling goods. Ilsan Traditional Market carries unique items that are difficult to find in department stores or large supermarkets, and sells a variety of items at low prices. There is a public parking lot (402 spaces) nearby, and purchases of KRW 10,000 or more qualify for 30 minutes of free parking.
