West Five Royal Tombs, Goyang
  • Address 334-32, Seooreung-ro, Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do

Introduction

Seooreung, which translates to “five tombs in the west,” is the second largest group of Joseon royal tombs.
In recognition of its significance, it has been designated a World Heritage Site.
The tombs of several royals can be found, including the tomb of King Sejo's eldest son, Crown Prince Uigyeong (Gyeongneung), tomb of King Yejong (Changneung), tomb of Crown Prince Sunhoe (Sunchangwon), tomb of Queen Ingyeong (Ingneung), tomb of King Sukjong (Myeongneung), and tomb of Queen Jeongseong (Hongneung).
In the 1970s, Lady Yi's Sugyeongwon and Royal Noble Consort Huibin Jang's Daebinmyo were relocated to this location, transforming it into the current Seooreung Royal Tombs, which contains five royal tombs, two tombs, and one grave. The grandeur of Myeongneung and Ingneung may surprise you upon first encounter.
In particular, the best locations based on geomancy were selected for the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, so it is recommended to explore them.
The sites can be fully enjoyed visited with plenty of time to spare. It takes approximately an hour to see all five royal tombs, and even longer to stroll along the promenade behind Ingneung.
You can enjoy fresh air thanks to the dense forest, and there are benches for resting. The forests are green in the spring and summer, and they turn brilliant shades of red and yellow in the fall when the maple trees are in full color
