West Three Royal Tombs, Goyang
  • Address 233-126, Seosamneung-gil, Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do

Introduction

The literal translation of Seosamneung is “three royal tombs in the west.” The Heonneung Royal Tomb (Taejong and Queen Wongyeong) and the Huireung Royal Tomb of King Jungjong's second queen, Queen Janggyeong, were relocated to this location from the west in 1537.
The current Seosamneung is the result of numerous transformations. Originally, in 1545, King Jungjong's tomb was constructed on a hill west of Huireung (now Yereung), and the combined tombs of King Jungjong and Queen Janggyeong were named Jeongneung. The following year, King Injong's Hyoreung was constructed, and when King Jungjong's tomb was relocated to Gangnam, Seoul, in 1562, Queen Janggyeong's tomb was renamed Huireung.
Afterwards, Crown Prince Sohyeon's Sogyeongwon and King Cheoljong of Joseon's Yereung were built within the vicinity.
In addition, during the Japanese colonial period, the royal family's Placenta Chamber and the tombs of princes, princesses, and concubines were moved from all over the country to the vicinity of Seosamneung to form a group placenta chamber and Bunmyogun, and Crown Prince Munhyo's Hyochangwon was also relocated.
The placenta chamber area (placenta chamber, tombs of princes and queens, tombs of concubines, and hoemyo tombs) is approximately 2 kilometers away from the Seosamneung ticket office and is only accessible via online reservations.
Unfortunately, Hyoreung and Sogyeongwon are private areas and cannot be visited.
