Introduction

Designation No.: Historic Site No. 162
Date of Designation: December 5, 1968
Located on the border of Bukhan-dong, Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, and Gangbuk-gu, Jongno-gu, and Eunpyeong-gu in Seoul, Bukhansanseong Fortress is a stacked stone mountain fortress that overlooks all of these areas. It was reportedly constructed in the fifth year of Baekje's King Gaeru (132). The name Bukhansanseong appeared as an important fortress to block Goguryeo's southward advance and defend the capital; however, it is unclear whether the Bukhansanseong from the Three Kingdoms period is the same as the present-day Bukhansanseong. In the 19th year of King Gojong (1232) of Goryeo Dynasty, there was a fierce battle here during the second invasion of the Mongol army. King Taejo relocated his palace here during the Khitan invasion, and the Joseon Dynasty under King Sukjong saw significant shrinking and growing. The walls of the fortress were constructed using the naetak method, building the inner soil wall and outer stone wall. The natural topography was utilized to its fullest by connecting peaks to peaks. According to records, there were 14 gates, five of which were gate towers, and three of which had military commander's post. The existence of 26 reservoirs and 99 wells is also rumored, but cannot be confirmed.
