- Veritable Records of King Seonjo, Volume 35, 26th year of King Seonjo, February 24, 6th article of Giyu -

On February 12, 1593, in the lunar calendar, imminent war clouds gathered from dawn in Seongsan, Haengju, Goyang-gun, where the Han River flowed to the south and Hanyang could be seen to the east. Kwon Yul, who led the victory at the Battle of Ichi and the Battle of Dokseongsanseong during the early days of the Imjin War, was gathered here with about 2,300 elite soldiers. Before dawn, a Japanese army of 30,000 men charged in in the darkness. Kwon Yul and the Joseon army fought fiercely throughout the day despite an overwhelming force difference of more than ten times, and finally achieved a great historic victory. This victory, which became a crucial turning point for Joseon in recapturing Hanyang, was later called the Battle of Haengju, one of the three great victories of the Imjin War along with the Battle of Hansando and the Battle of Jinju.

Haengjusanseong Fortress, the site of the Battle of Haengju, was designated as a historic site in 1963. Inside the fortress, you can find the Haengju Battle Monument (original and reconstruction monuments) and Chungjangsa Shrine, which houses the portrait of General Kwon Yul. Additionally, at this location, the Haengju Battle Memorial Hall offers a space where you can vividly experience the Battle of Haengju. I hope that you will take the time to go back to that day, February 12, 1593 in the lunar calendar, when they fought seven times from before dawn to after sunset and won seven times, and feel the fierce battle scene and the thrill of victory together.
